Modern Foreign Languages

The intent of the French curriculum at Goodyers End Primary is that children are taught to develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating.  We strive to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing to enable children to use and apply their French learning, and lay the foundations for future language learning.  Our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum is designed to develop skills in French, through regular taught lessons in KS2.  Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics.  Our scheme of work ensures coverage and progression across the school.

Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through active learning in the form of conversational work, singing activities and games.  As their confidence and knowledge & skills grow, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences.

Displays within class and around the school are used to remind children of key vocabulary and promote regular practice.  Language learning is a part of the day-to-day life of the school.  For example, teachers use the foreign language to give simple classroom instructions, to take the register (Year 1 - Year 6), or greet one another.  Children are encouraged to respond using the language they have learned, and sometimes teachers and pupils develop new language skills together; teachers acting as role models in the learning process.

Word mats and knowledge organisers are routinely available for children to have out on desks to support their learning and recap previous learning.

Attached below is the Knowledge and Skills Progression document for Modern Foreign Languages.  This details the areas children will cover in various year groups.
